Some things to Remember to Plan for Hurricane Irma

Although Hurricane Irma’s track continues moving to our west and the forecast is looking more favorable for our area, we can still expect high winds and significant rainfall late Monday in to Tuesday.

The Landrum Area Fire and Rescue District wants to offer some tips for everyone to remember as the storm approaches, passes through, and cleanup begins.

  • Maintain a 72-hour supply of water and non-perishable food. In case the power fails, you need something that doesn’t require refrigeration. Buying bottled water isn’t necessary unless you just want to do it. Fill empty containers you already have like milk jugs and 2-liter Coke/Pepsi bottles.
  • Charge cellphones and electronic devices, and have enough batteries on hand.
  • Stay clear of any downed power lines and anything that those lines touch. Allow power crews and emergency personnel to secure these areas since the lines will likely be energized.
  • If you see standing water as you’re driving, remember this. Turn around. Don’t drown. Flooded areas can be deeper than you believe, and water can sweep a car away more easily than you know. Do not attempt to drive through it.

Please know that this hurricane is changing hour-by-hour and that there is still a probability that the forecast will change several times between now and when the storm makes landfall and begins tracking to our area.

Accordingly, in order to keep our residents safe, the Landrum Area Fire and Rescue District is constantly reviewing storm models and preparing equipment and manpower to safely and effectively handle emergencies that arise.

Make sure to stay tuned to local news outlets for more information.
