Training to Keep Our Skills Sharp

Landrum Area Fire and Rescue District personnel recently completed their annual refresher burn training exercises at the Boiling Springs Fire Department’s mobile training facility. Designed to reinforce firefighting strategic competencies, the training also serves to meet requirements from the Insurance Services Office (ISO) that rates the nation’s fire departments and is partially responsible for influencing property owners’ insurance premiums.

The first evolution was fire room thermal layering and thermal imager training.

The second evolution was fire suppression and detecting temperature changes with a thermal imager.

The third evolution was search and rescue with a thermal imager and using a ladder and window for egress.

Training was organized and coordinated by Training Captain Calem Upton, and this year, we welcomed the Landrum News Leader’s editor Tricia Taber to provide her with a first person account of what our firefighters do to make sure they are trained and ready to get on the truck the next time the tones go off.
