After sorting and reviewing applications and recommendations that were submitted over a period of several weeks, the Landrum Area Fire and Rescue District awarded its 2021 $1000 scholarships to Patrick Clark and Ian Owens, seniors at Landrum High School.
With their applications, students were required to prepare an essay of 200 words or more describing their experience(s) with community service and how it impacted them as students and citizens.
The contest was open to any high school seniors living within the Landrum Area Fire and Rescue District service area or attending Landrum High School. This allowed for inclusion of public school, private school, and homeschool students. They were required to have a minimum 3.0 GPA, recommendation letters, and attend college in the fall semester of 2021.
Patrick Clark has a 4.922 GPA and plans to attend the Clemson University to major in recreational therapy.
A member of the Landrum High School varsity football, basketball, and baseball teams, Patrick has volunteered with Salkehatchie Summer Service through Landrum United Methodist Church and Operation Hope.
Patrick was characterized by his teachers as a compassionate leader and an asset to Landrum High School.
Patrick wrote in his essay, “As a student, being a volunteer has helped me be more grateful for what I have and become more aware of my peers. Volunteering in a community is a great way to help out and give back to the community and to others.”
Ian Owens has a 4.882 GPA and plans to attend North Greenville University to major in Business.
He was a member of the weightlifting and baseball teams before moving to competing as a member of the cross country and track and field teams.
Ian volunteers with Mobile Meals and is a member of the National Beta Club, the Language Club, and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He also serves as a leader in the youth ministry First Baptist Church Landrum.
Ian was characterized by his teachers as dependable and responsible with strong work ethic.
Ian wrote in his essay, “Volunteering allows you to help others and have a valuable impact in their lives. But it also allows you to meet new people, build relationships and develop social skills. I have gained a sense of achievement by serving in the area where I live.”
Pam Hilsman, chair of the Landrum Area Fire and Rescue District Commission said, “We are incredibly fortunate to live in a community where service to others is a value instilled across generations. This class of graduating high school seniors, the ones who came before them, and the ones who will follow consistently demonstrate the importance of working to better their community and highlight why we should recognize them for doing just that.”
Chief Warren Ashmore echoed Hilsman’s thoughts. “It’s great to review applications and see how these young people make time to volunteer in their communities. I wish them the best of luck and hope that they stay involved in community giving wherever their lives may go.”
Congratulations Patrick and Ian and the entire Class of 2021.
The Landrum Area Fire and Rescue District is expected to award up to two scholarships next year.
