The Landrum Area Fire and Rescue District is currently accepting applications for the position of: One (1) Full Time Captain.
Candidates must be at minimum 23 years old, FFII, current NREMT-Basic or higher, Valid Driver’s License (Class E preferred), and available for emergency call back as needed.
Position is for a 24/48 schedule.
Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a department administered physical and background check.
Must be able to communicate effectively and administer daily staffing and operational needs.
Starting Salary Range-DOE.

Fire Captain
The purpose of the class is to supervise, coordinate and participate in the activities of firefighting crews at all incidents, including but not limited to fires, hazardous material incidents and rescue operations; to ensure the accurate and complete documentation of all assigned activities; and to perform related administrative, supervisory, and technical work as required. This class works within broad policy and organizational guidelines and does independent planning and implementation, reporting progress of major activities through periodic conferences and meetings. The Shift Captain for Landrum Fire and Rescue District (Fire District) is the link between the employees and management. This position sets the atmosphere in which the Fire District operates. This position is a major factor in setting the attitude and working environment in which employees operate. The shift captain must be positive in all aspects of their duties. The Shift Captain must set an example for the employees they manage. All Shift Captains must maintain a positive attitude toward the operations and the management of the Landrum Fire and Rescue District on and off duty. Shift Captains are to work together with the Chief Officers and Commissioners to achieve set goals that allow the Fire District to grow and provide better service to its customers. The Shift Captain shall work as a team member for the betterment of the Landrum Fire and Rescue District.

Reports to: Fire Chief
Definition:
The Shift Captain manages a 24/48-hour shift. They are responsible for all day-to-day operations; for employee actions on shift; enforcing rules, regulations, and guidelines; for discipline of employees on shift.
ESSENTIAL TASKS
The tasks listed below are those that represent most of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional tasks related to the type of work of the class, as necessary. Supervises, coordinates, and participates in firefighting, rescue, and hazardous materials incident response on assigned shift. The Fire Captain supervises subordinate personnel through the chain of command; supervisory duties including instructing; assigning, reviewing, and planning work of others; maintaining standards; coordinating activities; allocating personnel; acting on employee problems; and recommending employee discipline. Reviews the work of subordinates for completeness and accuracy; assists in evaluating employee performance; offers advice and assistance as needed.
The Fire Captain shall:
- Participate in all aspects of the training matrix.
- The Fire Captain inspects personnel, apparatus, equipment, and stations for compliance with established policies, procedures, and standards of safety.
- Meet as needed with the other Shift Captains and the Fire Chief to coordinate operations and duties of each shift.
Assumes command of emergency incidents and fire stations in the absence of a superior officer; may perform duties of Deputy Chief/Assistant Chief in his absence as required.
Responds to emergency incidents; determines the nature and extent of fires, condition of building, danger to adjacent buildings and source of water supply; makes decisions regarding fire suppression methods to be used; directs firefighting work until relieved by superior officer; supervises and participates in the laying of hose lines, directing of water streams, placing ladders, ventilating buildings, and completing salvage operations. The Fire Captain participates in rescue operations and the administration of emergency first aid and CPR at the National Registry EMT-Basic level.
Educate yourself and your shift in the following areas:
- All aspects of the Standard Operations Guidelines
- Special code and pre-fire planning problems.
- Special calls (Rescues, Haz-Mat, Terror Threats, etc.)
- Prevention safety (fire, medical, water, etc.)
- Station computer system and programs.
The Fire Captain documents all fire and other emergency incidents and responses.
Supervises and participates in the maintenance of assigned fire apparatus, equipment, buildings, and grounds; ensures all fire apparatus and equipment is in a constant state of readiness for emergency response. The Fire Captain may conduct fire drills.
Receives and responds to public inquiries, complaints, and requests for assistance regarding areas of responsibility. Attends training, conferences, seminars, and meetings to remain knowledgeable of modern fire suppression methods and administration; maintains required certifications. Performs general administrative / clerical work as required, including but not limited to preparing reports and correspondence, copying, and filing documents, entering, and retrieving computer data, attending, and conducting meetings, answering the telephone, etc. Shall live within the reach of Spartanburg, Polk, and Greenville County dispatch tone signals and may be requested to return to duty for emergency response.
ADDITIONAL SHIFT CAPTAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:
Maintain minimum training requirements as set forth by the Fire District.
Coordinate all operational concerns with the Fire Chief.
Coordinate shift medical concerns with Fire Chief or Medical Operations Coordinator.
Coordinate and prioritize all day-to-day operations.
Debrief with outgoing shift and transfer information to oncoming shift.
Check the work calendar, plus two shifts ahead to ensure staffing is adequate.
Review all daily run reports for accuracy.
Schedule personnel to work during sick leave.
Complete any personnel accident forms and forward them to the Chief.
First link in the District Chain of Command for handling shift conflicts and discipline problems and/or employee commendations.
Responsible for reporting and documenting equipment maintenance requests.
Complete all assigned PS Trax tasks and ensure all pass down is recorded
Fill in for shifts where EMT or Captain is not available.

DATA INVOLVEMENT:
The position of Fire Captain requires planning and or directing others in the sequence of major activities and reporting on operations and activities which are broad in nature.
PEOPLE INVOLVEMENT:
The position of Fire Captain requires supervising or leading others by determining work procedures, assigning duties, maintaining harmonious relations, and promoting efficiency.
INVOLVEMENT WITH OTHER ITEMS:
Requires supervising the activities of those operating or repairing complex machinery or equipment that requires extensive training and experience, such as fire engines, fire suppression / rescue equipment, etc., or the application of custom or commercial administrative or other complex software or systems; may involve installation and testing.
Also, must perform the role of Training Officer for the department as outlined in the training officer job functions.
COGNITIVE REQUIREMENTS
REASONING REQUIREMENTS:
The position of Fire Captain requires performing supervisory work involving policy and guidelines, solving both people- and work-related problems.
MATHEMATICAL REQUIREMENTS:
The position of Fire Captain requires using basic algebra involving variables and formulas and/or basic geometry involving plane and solid figures, circumferences, areas, and volumes, and/or computing discounts and interest rates.
LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS:
The position of Fire Captain requires reading technical instructions, procedures, manuals, and charts to solve practical problems; composing routine reports and specialized reports, forms and business letters with proper format; speaking compound sentences using normal grammar and word form.
MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:
Requires doing professional-level work requiring the application of principles and practices in a wide range of administrative, technical or managerial methods in the solution of administrative or technical problems; or the coordination of entry-level managerial work; requires general understanding of operating policies and procedures and the ability to apply these to complex administrative problems; requires continuous, close attention for accurate results or frequent exposure to unusual pressures.
VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE PREPARATION
VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL PREPARATION:
The position of Fire Captain requires a high school diploma or GED equivalent supplemented by formal training.
SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:
Fire Captain must possess a valid state driver’s license (preferably Class E license)
Fire Captain must possess S.C. Firefighter Level II, Fire Officer and Incident Command, Hazard Materials Operations certifications.
Fire Captain shall possess National Registry EMT-Basic certifications.
Fire Captain may be required to obtain other technical or professional certifications as deemed necessary by the administration.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Requires 3 years of fire management experience.
Minimum of 5 years’ fire service experience.

The position of Fire Captain requires heavy work that involves walking, standing, climbing, balancing, stooping, crouching, crawling, kneeling, reaching, and lifting, pushing, or raising objects, exerting between 50 and 75 pounds of force on a recurring basis and over 100 pounds of force on a frequent basis.
ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS:
The job may risk exposure to fire hazards, extreme heat and/or cold, wet, or humid conditions, extreme noise levels, vibration, fumes and/or noxious odors, airborne particles, traffic, moving machinery, electrical shock, heights, disease/pathogens, toxic/caustic chemicals, and explosives.

The job requires normal visual acuity, depth perception and field of vision, hearing and speaking ability, color perception, odor perception.
