2024 College Scholarship Opportunity

The Landrum Area Fire and Rescue District is offering up to two college scholarships valued at an amount up to $1000.00 each.

High school seniors earning a high school diploma, attending college in the fall of 2024, currently residing in within the Landrum Area Fire and Rescue District, and posting a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 on a weighted 4.0 grading scale are eligible to apply.

The application form with qualifications and instructions is available for download HERE.

The application period is open now, and all applications must be received no later than April 30, 2024 at 3:00 p.m.

Applications will be reviewed by the Recruitment and Retention Coordinator Board, and recipients will be notified in the spring of 2024.

Landrum Area Fire and Rescue District Awards 2023 Scholarships

(May 31, 2023 – Landrum, SC) After sorting and reviewing applications and recommendations that were submitted over a period of several weeks, the Landrum Area Fire and Rescue District awarded its 2023 $1000 scholarships to Jack Clark, Abigail Fowler, and Kennedi Lee, seniors at Landrum High School.

With their applications, students were required to prepare an essay of 200 words or more describing their experience(s) with community service and how it impacted them as students and citizens.

The contest was open to any high school seniors living within the Landrum Area Fire and Rescue District service area or attending Landrum High School. This allowed for inclusion of public school, private school, and homeschool students. They were required to have a minimum 3.0 GPA, recommendation letters, and attend college in the fall semester of 2023.

Jack Clark has a 3.84 GPA and plans to attend the Clemson University to major in Construction Science and Management.

A member of the Landrum High School varsity football and baseball teams, Jack has volunteered with Landrum United Methodist Church and Operation Hope and is a member of the Beta Club and Interact Club.

Jack was characterized by his teachers as “an articulator and influencer who will make a talented future leader.”

Abigail Fowler has a 3.793 GPA and plans to attend Anderson University to major in secondary math or English education.

She was captain of the Landrum High School Marching Band Colorguard and Winterguard.

Abigail volunteers with Landrum First Baptist Church and is a member of the National Beta Club.

Abigail was characterized by her teachers as someone who will “do well at the next level and will represent Landrum High School and the community with integrity and character.”

Kennedi Lee has a 3.937 GPA and plans to attend Charleston Southern University to major in Kinesiology or Nursing.

She participated in Fellowship of Christian Athletes as a Leadership Team member, Beta Club, Language Club, Flock Spirit Club, FFA, and volleyball.

Kennedi volunteers with Landrum First Baptist Church.

Her teachers say, “Kennedi’s strength and determination and choice to always have a smile on her face, no matter the situation, is what makes her an outstanding student and overall individual. Her talents and willingness to complete any task with excellence will contribute to her success outside of Landrum High School.”

Pam Hilsman, chair of the Landrum Area Fire and Rescue District Commission said, “Integrity. Influence. Dedication. These are not the words our young people use to describe themselves. These are the words their teachers use. It’s a true testament to this year’s scholarship award recipients that this is the lens we can use to view them.”

Chief Warren Ashmore echoed Hilsman’s thoughts. “Today’s students are tomorrow’s leaders, and we’re fortunate as a community to have the caliber of future leaders who will be able to not only guide the future of the Landrum area but wherever they may take their talents as adults.”

Congratulations Jack, Abigail, Kennedi, and the entire Class of 2023.

After sorting and reviewing applications and recommendations that were submitted over a period of several weeks, the Landrum Area Fire and Rescue District awarded its 2021 $1000 scholarships to Patrick Clark and Ian Owens, seniors at Landrum High School.

With their applications, students were required to prepare an essay of 200 words or more describing their experience(s) with community service and how it impacted them as students and citizens.

The contest was open to any high school seniors living within the Landrum Area Fire and Rescue District service area or attending Landrum High School. This allowed for inclusion of public school, private school, and homeschool students. They were required to have a minimum 3.0 GPA, recommendation letters, and attend college in the fall semester of 2021.

Patrick Clark has a 4.922 GPA and plans to attend the Clemson University to major in recreational therapy.

A member of the Landrum High School varsity football, basketball, and baseball teams, Patrick has volunteered with Salkehatchie Summer Service through Landrum United Methodist Church and Operation Hope.

Patrick was characterized by his teachers as a compassionate leader and an asset to Landrum High School.

Patrick wrote in his essay, “As a student, being a volunteer has helped me be more grateful for what I have and become more aware of my peers. Volunteering in a community is a great way to help out and give back to the community and to others.”

Ian Owens has a 4.882 GPA and plans to attend North Greenville University to major in Business.

He was a member of the weightlifting and baseball teams before moving to competing as a member of the cross country and track and field teams.

Ian volunteers with Mobile Meals and is a member of the National Beta Club, the Language Club, and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He also serves as a leader in the youth ministry First Baptist Church Landrum.

Ian was characterized by his teachers as dependable and responsible with strong work ethic.

Ian wrote in his essay, “Volunteering allows you to help others and have a valuable impact in their lives. But it also allows you to meet new people, build relationships and develop social skills. I have gained a sense of achievement by serving in the area where I live.”

Pam Hilsman, chair of the Landrum Area Fire and Rescue District Commission said, “We are incredibly fortunate to live in a community where service to others is a value instilled across generations. This class of graduating high school seniors, the ones who came before them, and the ones who will follow consistently demonstrate the importance of working to better their community and highlight why we should recognize them for doing just that.”

Chief Warren Ashmore echoed Hilsman’s thoughts. “It’s great to review applications and see how these young people make time to volunteer in their communities. I wish them the best of luck and hope that they stay involved in community giving wherever their lives may go.”

After sorting and reviewing applications and recommendations that were submitted over a period of several weeks, the Landrum Area Fire and Rescue District awarded its 2020 $1000 scholarships to Emily Jolley and Gracelyn Lance, seniors at Landrum High School.

With their applications, students were required to prepare an essay of 200 words or more describing their experience(s) with community service and how it impacted them as students and citizens.

The contest was open to any high school seniors living within the Landrum Area Fire and Rescue District service area or attending Landrum High School. This allowed for inclusion of public school, private school, and homeschool students. They were required to have a minimum 3.0 GPA, recommendation letters, and attend college in the fall semester of 2020.

Emily Jolley has a 3.7 GPA and plans to attend the College of Charleston Honors College and double major in Political Science and Chemistry. She was also a student of the Scholars Academy at USC-Upstate.

A member of the Landrum High School track team, Emily volunteers at Chosen Children Ministries, First Baptist Church- Landrum Weekday Preschool, and as a tutor for the Scholars Academy.

Emily was characterized by her teachers as compassionate, enthusiastic, self-motivated, resilient, and intellectually driven for excellence.

Emily wrote in her essay, “Ultimately, I have learned from my community service activities, that loving people is so much more important than material things and leads to a more joy-filled life, true compassion leads to action, and that the struggles in life are universal.”

Gracelyn Lance has a 3.97 GPA and plans to attend Anderson University to major in Elementary Education with an add-on Certification in Secondary Education.

She was a member of the Varsity Cheer Competition Team, Varsity Football and Basketball Cheer Teams, and Varsity Soccer. Gracelyn was also Senior Class Vice-President.

Gracelyn volunteers as a Spout Leader at The Well and works part-time at IGA in Tryon.

Gracelyn was characterized by her teachers as very responsible and hard-working, mature, determined, dependable, polite, friendly, and with a sunny disposition

Gracelyn wrote in her essay, “These are the very qualities that I believe make me a good leader. I am someone who always puts everyone before me. I love for people to be able to depend on me; I always want everyone to know that if they call, I’ll be there.”

Congratulations Emily and Gracelyn and the entire Class of 2020.
