On July 11, 2017, the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office notified the media and general public about a scam involving individuals posing as firefighters from local departments.
The reports indicated that the suspect(s) are going door-to-door trying to gain entry into the homes by requesting to check residents’ smoke detectors.
In all instances, the requests were scams, and the Greenville County Fire Chiefs’ Association confirmed that no members of their departments had gone door-to-door making such requests.
In at least one instance, the suspects were described as two white-males in their mid-20s and wearing blue t-shirts and cargo pants.
While the Landrum Area Fire and Rescue District offers a program to deliver and install 10-year smoke alarms at no charge to our residents, firefighters will arrive in a marked fire department vehicle and wear clothing identifying them as Landrum Fire and Rescue personnel.
