Give Thanks, and Stay Safe

With the holiday season beginning with Thanksgiving, kitchens all around the area will be buzzing with activity, and family and friends of all ages will be getting in on the action.

Thanksgiving by the Numbers

  • Thanksgiving is the peak day for home cooking fires, followed by Christmas Day, Christmas Eve, and the day before Thanksgiving.
  • In 2017, U.S. fire departments responded to an estimated 1,600 home cooking fires on Thanksgiving, the peak day for such fires.
  • Unattended cooking was by far the leading contributing factor in cooking fires and fire deaths.
  • Cooking equipment was involved in almost half of all reported home fires and home fire injuries, and it is the second leading cause of home fire deaths.

Fire safety in the kitchen during this time of year is important, so as we all begin preparing our holiday schedules and organizing those big family events, we want to give you a few simple tips to keep you and your loved ones safe from fire.

Safety Tips

  • Stay in the kitchen when you are cooking on the stovetop so you can keep an eye on the food.
  • Stay in the home when cooking your turkey and check on it frequently.
  • Keep children away from the stove. The stove will be hot and kids should stay 3 feet away.
  • Make sure kids stay away from hot food and liquids. The steam or splash from vegetables, gravy or coffee could cause serious burns.
  • Keep the floor clear so you don’t trip over kids, toys, pocketbooks or bags.
  • Keep knives out of the reach of children.
  • Be sure electric cords from an electric knife, coffee maker, plate warmer or mixer are not dangling off the counter within easy reach of a child.
  • Keep matches and utility lighters out of the reach of children — up high in a locked cabinet.
  • Never leave children alone in room with a lit candle.
  • Make sure your smoke alarms are working. Test them by pushing the “Test” button.

2019 Landrum Christmas Parade — December 14, 2019

This year’s Landrum Christmas Parade – sponsored by the Landrum Area Fire and Rescue District – is scheduled for Saturday, December 14, 2019 at 2:00 p.m.

Registration is now open, and forms can be downloaded HERE.

Hardcopies of parade registration forms are also available at the fire station on North Trade Avenue.

This year’s parade has no charge for entries.

All entries must be received by December 11, 2019.

Dignitaries include the parade’s grand marshal, local elected officials, and, of course, Santa.

Due to traffic congestion on North Trade Avenue, participants are encouraged to load floats prior to parade line-up. This can be done in the Burke’s parking lot.

The route begins on N. Trade Avenue between the Depot and the fire station. It continues down N. Trade Avenue, turning left on E. Rutherford, and progresses to Redland Road with a right turn at O. P. Earle Elementary School. The parade ends at Landrum Middle School.
