As an overall community, we often think that we live in a bubble. Even though we can get to them conveniently, we’re removed from large metropolitan areas. Nothing can touch us. Right?
Unfortunately, no.
Just a year ago, wildfires raged at Pinnacle Mountain in South Carolina and Party Rock at Lake Lure in North Carolina. Just a couple of weeks ago, severe storms that generated tornadoes swept through the Lake Lanier area.
There are things we need to remain aware of and things that we, as a community, need to understand.
I’m asking you to join us on Thursday, November 9 at 6:30 p.m. at Landrum High School (18818 Asheville Highway, Campobello, SC 29322) as we present our Wildfire Protection Plan – part of the Landrum Area Fire and Rescue District’s Community Risk Reduction Plan.
A collaboration between local fire service professionals and the South Carolina Forestry Commission, our Wildfire Protection Plan will provide information and tools to help keep our community safe.
Our hope is that we will have extensive public participation and that at least one representative from each neighborhood’s homeowners’ association will be present to then educate their more localized communities.
Among the topics we’ll discuss are:
- Wildfire Hazards and Risk Assessments
- Structure Ignitability
- Defensible Spaces
- Fuel Mitigation Zones
- Plant Flammability
- Informational Resources
- Relative Risks within the Landrum Area Fire and Rescue District
- Underground Electrical Transformers / Junction Boxes
- “Ready, Set, Go!” Program Information
