Learn Before You Burn

If you’re planning on burning any brush or debris on your property, please make sure you understand the state’s laws about doing it safely and properly. Download a brochure HERE.

Also, make sure you call the appropriate agency to notify them of your planned burn.

If you are OUTSIDE the city limits, state law requires that you notify the South Carolina Forestry Commission prior to burning outdoors. In most cases, the law applies to burning leaves, limbs and branches that you clean up from your yard. Spartanburg County residents should call 1-800-517-9640. Greenville County residents should call 1-800-986-5299.

If you are INSIDE the city limits, call the Landrum Area Fire and Rescue District directly at (864) 457-3101.

“Fire Safe SC” Provides Free Smoke Alarms for the Hearing Impaired

During a fire emergency — especially when you’re sleeping — not hearing a smoke alarm increases the risk of injury for anyone who is hearing impaired.

To reduce that risk, for a limited time, approved applicants are being provided alarms (commonly known as “bed-shakers”) for hearing impaired residents.

To fulfill approved applicant requests, Fire Safe SC is partnering with local fire departments like the Landrum Area Fire and Rescue District to set up a time to install a free alarm.

Availability of these alarms is limited.

Hearing Impaired Smoke Alarm Program FAQ

Q:       What is Fire Safe SC?
A:       Fire Safe SC is a new community risk reduction program and partnership between the Office of State Fire Marshal, S.C. Firefighters’ Association, S.C. State Association of Fire Chiefs, and the S.C. Fire Marshals’ Association.

Q:       Are there any costs associated with receiving an alarm?
A:       No. This alarm is free.

Q:       If I receive an alarm through this program, why is my local fire department involved in the installation?
A:       The Office of State Fire Marshal serves a supportive role to the local fire department who protects your community.

Q:       What is a “bed-shaker”?
A:       A bed-shaker is not a smoke alarm, rather it works with smoke alarms in the home to notify hearing impaired individuals of a possible life-threatening fire emergency.

Q:      How many bed shakers can I receive through this program?
A:       Each qualified applicant may receive one hearing impaired smoke alarm.

Q:       What if I don’t have working smoke alarms in my home?
A:       If you’re unable to secure them, the Office of State Fire Marshal will work with your local fire department and other resources to attempt to meet your needs.

Q:       Who do I contact if my bed shaker malfunctions?
A:       You may call the Office of State Fire Marshal at (803) 896-5454 or email FIRESAFESC@LLR.SC.GOV.

Q:       How long does it take to receive an alarm after applying?
A:       Attempts will be made to fulfill approved requests as quickly as possible. Within a few weeks of receiving an application, our office will contact the requestor. Once approved, to coordinate installation, contact will be made with your local fire department

Q:       Are there any structural modifications made to my home during the installation?
A:       No. Bed shakers are installed in your bed and do not require any modifications.

Q:       If there is a fire, will this unit notify my local fire department? Or, will I still need to call 911?
A:       No, the bed-shaker will not alert your fire department. Call 911 in the event of a fire.
